How to apply

Joining a volunteer project under the European Solidarity Corps program is a multi-step process that combines formal registration in the EU system with a direct application to a specific project. Below you will find all the steps you need to take to successfully complete the application process.

To participate in an ESC volunteering project, you must:

  • be between 18 and 30 years old
  • be a resident of a country eligible to participate in the program
  • be ready to engage in social and intercultural activities

The first step is to create a profile in the European Solidarity Corps system.

👉 Go to the European Youth Portal and register in the volunteer database.

During registration:

  • complete your profile (experience, motivation, interests)
  • indicate your availability and project preferences

Your profile acts as a business card—organizations can use it to invite you to a project!

Find a volunteer project

You can apply in two ways:

  • by browsing offers in the European Youth Portal database
  • by applying directly through organizations (e.g., WSB Academy)

It’s a good idea to apply to several projects at once—this increases your chances of participating!

Prepare your application

The most commonly required documents are:

  • CV
  • cover letter
  • (sometimes) an application form

The selection process may include document screening and an online interview (e.g., via Zoom/Skype).

After applications are submitted, the host organization reviews them, focusing primarily on the candidate’s motivation, their suitability for the nature of the project, and their experience and skills. Based on this, the individuals who best fit the project’s objectives are selected. Selected candidates receive an invitation to participate in the project, which they then confirm.

Once accepted, the organizational formalities phase begins. Each volunteer works with both the host and sending organizations, which are jointly responsible for implementing the project. During this phase, the necessary documents are signed, and the details of the assignment are finalized, such as the start date, location, and scope of duties. All projects are carried out by organizations holding the Quality Label certification.

Before departure, participants take part in volunteer preparation, which may take the form of organizational meetings or online training sessions. They also receive all necessary logistical information regarding travel and accommodation, and have the opportunity to access language support and additional training materials.

It’s important to remember that the application process requires sufficient lead time—it’s best to start 3 to 6 months before your planned departure. Application deadlines are tied to the European Union’s project funding schedule. Participation in ESC volunteer projects is fully funded, which means that participants are provided with accommodation, meals, a stipend, and reimbursement of travel expenses.
